Biggest Jump of the Week: Nickelback - When We Stand Together (+22)
Exciting stuff. The countdown was beginning to get stale, but then last week was very good, and now we have a great infusion of fresh blood. And luckily, though there's no single super-awesome new entrant, I would put the majority of them in the "good-to-pretty-good" category. Leading the charge at #33 is Pixie Lott - All About Tonight. It's pretty much the definition of "decent, but unspectacular", which believe me, is a welcome sight compared to most of the crap that's been in the Top 45 lately. The best of the new entrants is Foster the People - Don't Stop. For those whose first knowledge of Foster the People was Pumped Up Kicks (myself included), it continues their trend of putting together a weird and oddly catchy song. I don't figure to get sick of this one quickly. Next up is a resurrection of Swedish House Mafia - Save the World. Just about the only good thing about this song coming back is that I get to DTHNOB(x2) it in a future installment. It is an awful song that had no business on the Top 45 in the first place, let alone coming back for a farewell tour. If you like painfully dull songs, that one's for you.
Outasight - Tonight is the Night takes home the crown for having the best beat of any of the new songs to jump in. I'm definitely liking this one so far. Nicki Minaj Ft. Rihanna - Fly seems decent-ish as of right now, but I'm holding out judgement, as I could see it going in either direction after about 10-15 listens. I was a little concerned to see a song by The Fray on Hit-Bound, because I was sure it would make the countdown regardless of the quality of the song. Luckily, Heartbeat is a bit more of an up-tempo tune than we're accustomed to hear from them, and it definitely works. And finally, long-time Hit-Bound veteran Bush - The Sound of Winter jumps on in at #43. I like this song a good deal. It's a bit more hard-alternative and minor-chord-y than most songs you'll see in the Top 45.
This week was a pretty big deal with regards to the continuing songs as well. It seems like an effort is really being made to turn over the Top 10. Adele - Someone Like You fell all the way to #8, which is uncharacteristic (though not unheard of) for a prior week #1. We saw large (and unfortunate) drops from Katy Perry - Last Friday Night and Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks. However 5 new songs popped into the top 10, and most of them are welcome. Nickelback - When We Stand Together had a large jump to #4. I never expected this song to be a Top 5-er. It's definitely welcome considering the songs that have been occupying the Top 5 as of late. Also in the top 10 is Patrick Stump Ft. Lupe Fiasco - This City, a song that seems to keep getting better the more I hear it. I'm a bit confused as to the success of Katy Perry - The One That Got Away. It's a clear step down from her past 5 songs, and there's no way they'd make this #1, right? Right?
It seems like Jason Derulo - It Girl might actually be getting its due. It's certainly in the "plus" category, and sits at #5 this week. Hot Chelle Rae hosted the countdown. Suprisingly, they had to announce the DTHNOBbing of one of their own songs (Tonight Tonight) but predictably, whenever someone hosts the countdown, one of their songs does really well, explaining I Like it Like That's rise to #2. It's really climbed quickly.
