Gym Class Heroes (2) -- Week of November 19, 2011

Time to clean some house!!!! I'm really hoping this is the end of Someone Like You's run at the top of the countdown. And this DTHNOBbing is going to be fun, because a lot of these songs were overdue for a kick-out. Before we get on to this week's Fresh 45, here's a list of all the songs we're saying good-bye to this week.
  • OneRepublic - Good Life
  • Pitbull Ft. Ne-Yo - Give Me Everything
  • Plug In Stereo - Oh Darling
  • Hot Chelle Rae - Tonight Tonight
  • Bruno Mars - Marry You
  • Rihanna - Cheers (Drink to That)
  • Lloyd feat Lil' Wayne - Dedication to my Ex (Miss That)

Biggest DDDDDRRRRRROOOPPP!!!!.....of the week: Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks (-32)
Biggest Jump of the Week: Nickelback - When We Stand Together (+22)

Exciting stuff. The countdown was beginning to get stale, but then last week was very good, and now we have a great infusion of fresh blood. And luckily, though there's no single super-awesome new entrant, I would put the majority of them in the "good-to-pretty-good" category. Leading the charge at #33 is Pixie Lott - All About Tonight. It's pretty much the definition of "decent, but unspectacular", which believe me, is a welcome sight compared to most of the crap that's been in the Top 45 lately. The best of the new entrants is Foster the People - Don't Stop. For those whose first knowledge of Foster the People was Pumped Up Kicks (myself included), it continues their trend of putting together a weird and oddly catchy song. I don't figure to get sick of this one quickly. Next up is a resurrection of Swedish House Mafia - Save the World. Just about the only good thing about this song coming back is that I get to DTHNOB(x2) it in a future installment. It is an awful song that had no business on the Top 45 in the first place, let alone coming back for a farewell tour. If you like painfully dull songs, that one's for you.

Outasight - Tonight is the Night takes home the crown for having the best beat of any of the new songs to jump in. I'm definitely liking this one so far. Nicki Minaj Ft. Rihanna - Fly seems decent-ish as of right now, but I'm holding out judgement, as I could see it going in either direction after about 10-15 listens. I was a little concerned to see a song by The Fray on Hit-Bound, because I was sure it would make the countdown regardless of the quality of the song. Luckily, Heartbeat is a bit more of an up-tempo tune than we're accustomed to hear from them, and it definitely works. And finally, long-time Hit-Bound veteran Bush - The Sound of Winter jumps on in at #43. I like this song a good deal. It's a bit more hard-alternative and minor-chord-y than most songs you'll see in the Top 45.

This week was a pretty big deal with regards to the continuing songs as well. It seems like an effort is really being made to turn over the Top 10. Adele - Someone Like You fell all the way to #8, which is uncharacteristic (though not unheard of) for a prior week #1. We saw large (and unfortunate) drops from Katy Perry - Last Friday Night and Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks. However 5 new songs popped into the top 10, and most of them are welcome. Nickelback - When We Stand Together had a large jump to #4. I never expected this song to be a Top 5-er. It's definitely welcome considering the songs that have been occupying the Top 5 as of late. Also in the top 10 is Patrick Stump Ft. Lupe Fiasco - This City, a song that seems to keep getting better the more I hear it. I'm a bit confused as to the success of Katy Perry - The One That Got Away. It's a clear step down from her past 5 songs, and there's no way they'd make this #1, right? Right?

It seems like Jason Derulo - It Girl might actually be getting its due. It's certainly in the "plus" category, and sits at #5 this week. Hot Chelle Rae hosted the countdown. Suprisingly, they had to announce the DTHNOBbing of one of their own songs (Tonight Tonight) but predictably, whenever someone hosts the countdown, one of their songs does really well, explaining I Like it Like That's rise to #2. It's really climbed quickly.

Adele (2) - Week of November 12, 2011

Aaaaaaaaaand………..finally some new stuff that isn't mediocre!  Though this countdown still definitely has its share of problems.  Before we get on to this week's Fresh 45, here's a list of all the songs we're saying good-bye to this week.

  • O.A.R. - Heaven
  • Andy Grammer - Keep Your Head Up (DTHNOBx2)
  • Demi Lovato - Skyscraper
  • Aloe Blacc - I Need a Dollar

Biggest DDDDDRRROOOOPPPP!!!!!!!!.....of the week: Bad Meets Evil Ft. Bruno Mars - Lighters (-24)
Biggest Jump of the Week: Nicki Minaj - Super Bass (+31)

While we mourn the loss of Demi Lovato - Skyscraper, there has finally been an infusion of some good songs that can really help save the quality of the countdown.  First off is a farewell tour from JTX - Love In America.  Unfortunately, due to the current state of things, this is currently my most wutchuwanted song on the countdown.  Next up comes Matt & Kim Ft. Soulja Boy - I'm a Goner, a pretty solid song, and re: Soulja Boy, it was one of those "oh….so THAT's what he's up to these days" moments.  Snoop Dogg Ft. Wiz Khalifa - Young, Wild & Free is one of the best rap songs, Non-Eminem Dept. to come out in the past few years.  It is a VERY welcome addition to the countdown.  And finally, Bruno Mars - It Will Rain predictably jumped in, though surprisingly as high as #25.  It has some decent instrumentals, but like much of his music, I will soon be referring to it as "that stupid Bruno Mars song".

I've reconsidered and decided that Criminal is the best song Britney Spears has put out there since If U Seek Amy.  Not saying a ton, but it's something.  There's a few first-timers in the top 10 this week (Kelly Clarkson - Mr. Know It All, Hot Chelle Rae - I Like It Like That, and Dev - In the Dark), and absolutely none of them really deserve it.  Hot Chelle Rae in particular showed after their follow-up to Tonight Tonight that they're one-trick ponies that come up with some weird lyrics that are essentially valueless and sing them in a somewhat catchy fashion.  And I have no idea why anyone likes Dev - In the Dark.  It reminds me of Far East Movement - Like a G6 in a lot of ways….a song that would be mediocre to listen to in a club, and simply not good to listen to on the radio.

The Script is at #3 folks, let's keep those wutchuwants coming!

Adele - Week of November 5, 2011

I had to struggle to write this due to the extreme depression I am feeling from the most collectively disappointing #1 and #2 songs in history. Before we get on to this week's Fresh 45, here's a list of all the songs we're saying good-bye to this week:
  • Beyonce - Countdown
The Countdown: (Source: Wikipedia)
Biggest DDDDRRRROOPPPPP!!!!!!!!!............of the week: Kelly Clarkson - Mr. Know It All (-13)
Biggest jump of the week: Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks (+30)

The only new entrant is Coldplay - Paradise. I'm not going to review it because you've likely been under a rock for awhile if you haven't heard it. Yes, even those seeking refuge in something as un-Coldplay as Monday Night Football were treated to 5-second clips of this song.

Big, random, and welcome jump back into the top 5 for Foster the People. Is there still hope for a #1 bid? It seems like we've gone a bit back in time with Good Life and Moves Like Jagger jumping back into the top 10, while Stereo Hearts gets the Moves Like Jagger treatment and falls out of the top 10 just 2 weeks removed from a #1 bid.

Honestly, I typically like to write more, but this list just makes me sad. There hasn't been an outstanding new countdown entrant in quite some time. I'm hoping One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful makes the jump from Hit-Bound soon, but that song has been hanging around on Hit-Bound for long enough that it seems like it's destined to not make it. There really hasn't been a week with huge turnover in awhile, and I can see plenty of songs on the countdown that need to go. Here's hoping for some new blood, and soon.

Cobra Starship - Week of October 29, 2011

I go away to take one itty-bitty test and I come back, and all of a sudden, mediocrity reigns supreme. Before we get on to this week's Fresh-45, here's a list of all the songs we're saying good-bye to this week:
  • Iffy - Do You
  • Adele - Rolling in the Deep
The countdown: (Source: Wikipedia)
Biggest DDDDDDRRRRROOOOPPPPP!!!!!!!!......of the week: Aloe Blacc - I Need a Dollar (-30)
Biggest Jump of the Week: Pitbull Ft. Ne-Yo - Give Me Everything (+28)

I do not, nor ever will, understand why Cobra Starship is on top of the countdown this week. I had that song pegged for an extreme mediocrity from the start, and there was certainly no hidden value in hearing it again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again. So #nothappy. But at least it held off Someone Like You from takin' over the top spot for yet another week. And I'm still holding out hope that The Script - Nothing can move on in. We'll see.

Two new entrants this week. The first is Rihanna Ft. Calvin Harris - We Found Love. At the risk of alienating the Rihanna fans, it's a pretty sizable step down from her most recent two songs, but at least it isn't the pre-California King Bed crap. It's not a bad song, but it's indisputably a stupid song. Mind numbing repetition, and that stupid DJ-induced (I'm guessing that's Calvin Harris) squelching noise that building, and building, and building up to……..the exact same beat used in the rest of the song. Anti-climactic. Pass.

The other new entrant is Katy Perry - The One That Got Away. It's just OK. It's finally time for Katy Perry to stop trying to squeeze value out of what is arguably one of the best albums in music history (based on Billboard rankings! Calm down!) and start to produce new music. The song is a significant step down from each of her 5 #1 singles.

I am actually pretty surprised at how far Moves Like Jagger has fallen already. Usually multiple-week #1s stick around in the Top 5 for an annoyingly long period of time before finally going away. This one is fading pretty quick, and I'm kind of surprised by it, because it's a pretty strong song (compared to some of the weaker offerings that have stuck around forever lately, or anything Bruno Mars has ever done). It was pretty evident it would hit #1 at some point after just a few short weeks on the countdown.

The other big news this week is that I'm finally starting to get over Katy Perry - Last Friday Night, and it is no longer #1 on my 5 most wutchuwanted, for the first time in a long time. Also I am making these weekly e-mails into a blog, because my non-work friends have been getting very jealous of how lucky you guys are to have this every week.
