Pink (3) - Week of May 25, 2013

Oddly, last weekend, with a guest host, had a ton of movement, and upon Spyder Harrison’s return to weekend duty, the activity slowed down considerably.  Reversing the trend!  Before we get on to this week’s Fresh 45, here’s a list of all the songs we’re saying good-bye to this week.

Biggest Jump of the Week: Classified Ft. David Myles – Inner Ninja (+15)

Much to the dismay of reader Dan, we welcome back Awolnation – Sail after it was lost to the void for a week.  Michael Buble provides the only new music of the week in the form of his song entitled It’s a Beautiful Day.  It’s delightfully upbeat and pleasant, but nothing to write home about.  Just another song.

Blurbed Lines

- Icona Pop – I Love It at #5 is a big fat “no”.  Stop it.  Now.

- Seems like the window has shut on Ke$ha – C’mon for a run at the top.  Oh well.  Its opportunity came far too late anyway.

- Similarly, Krewella – Alive at #45 is also a big fat “no”.  Talk about a song not getting its due here.

- #23, #24, and #25 last week became #37, #38, and #39, respectively, this week.  Weird!  I am pointing this out because I have a blog where I write about a ranking of songs every week.

- Next week’s update is going to be a bit delayed.  Sorry.  I have not abandoned you!

Editor’s Picks – Top 5 Songs
1) Zedd Ft. Foxes – Clarity

Biggest DDDDDRRRROOOOPPP!!!!....of the week: Bruno Mars – When I Was Your Man (-32)
Biggest Jump of the Week: Bruno Mars – Treasure (+23)

Allllllllright!  Heck of a rundown to go through here.  Avril Lavigne – Here’s to Never Growing Up debuted this week (all the way up at #20!  “Thank you, Avril, for hosting the countdown!”).  I enjoy this song, but it sounds super similar to a hodgepodge of her trio of songs that were on the countdown in 2011, so no creativity points.  As someone who, in his post-college adult life, has taken the somewhat depressing point of view that the best days of life will always be in the rear view mirror, the theme of this song resonates more with me than, well, something written by Avril Lavigne should.

Imagine Dragons’sezes follow up to It’s Time is Radioactive, a song that I didn’t like at all at first, but it slowly hooked me in.  There’s too many weird sound effects in the music video for me to enjoy it as much as I do the radio version.  In the world of things that have a hashtag that don’t need one, will.i.am and Justin Bieber combined to produce #thatPOWER, and #itSUCKS.  The redeeming portion(s) of the song is(are) that in which Bieber sings the melodious “I’m alive I’m alive I’m alive”.  Besides that, nothing to see here, par for the course for one of the worst artists of present-day in will.i.am.  We wouldn’t have Hall of Fame without him, but I’d get over it.

Maroon 5 has put yet another song out there, Love Somebody.  It's got the up-tempo melody/beat of the "new" class of Maroon 5 music.  Thus far I'm enjoying it on par with something along the lines of Daylight. Because it's a Maroon 5 song, it's sure to be beaten to death in the coming months, and I'll probably have a blurb many weeks from now about wanting it to disappear, but hey, it's new now, right?

Jason Derulo is back on the countdown with The Other Side, and I’m definitely feeling this one, at least for the time being.  The 2nd half of the hook (beginning with “And I know, we ain’t friends anymore”) is Derulo taking it to the next level, because a previous version of himself might have gotten lazy and ended the chorus right before that.  A song called Inner Ninja gives rise to expectations of awesomeness but the song by Classified Ft. David Myles falls somewhat short of awesome.  I’m not sure what I’m going to think of it long-term, but for the time being, it’s a song with a catchy, yet underwhelming rhythm.  Maybe there’s undiscovered value to this song that I haven’t grown to appreciate, but more likely it’s gonna be an also-ran.  Finally, Jennifer Lopez Ft. Pitbull – Live It Up is the duo’s 2nd attempt to re-create the greatness of the dance jam On the Floor, and it’s also their second horrible, horrible failure to do so.

Blurb and Ernie

- I have a few notes on the recently DTHNOBbed.  I’d be sadder about the sudden disappearance of Muse – Madness had it not taken so long for this song to get on the countdown in the first place.

- I’m really glad that the whole PSY – Gentleman fad faded out quickly.  Between the hype and the music video, somewhere it got lost in the shuffle that the song is absolutely awful.

- I have no idea how Emeli Sande – Next to Me survived a 7-DTHNOB week.  That song’s tenure:popularity ratio is off the chart.

- Big news in rankings land this week is that country jam Florida Georgia Line – Cruise jumped all the way up into the top 5.  I’ve grown to appreciate this one with increased time on the countdown.

- Hot Chelle Rae – Hung Up (and Hot Chelle Rae in general) needs to stop being in the Top 10.  I could write an entire album for that band in a single day.

45. Chiddy Bang - Happening (#42)

Biggest DDDDDRRRRROOOOPPPP!!!!....of the week: Swedish House Mafia - Don't You Worry Child (-33)
Biggest Jump of the Week: Tegan & Sara - Closer (+14)

Jay Sean is back on the countdown with Where You Are, another data point in the stream of mediocrity he's pumped out.  It's now been 4 years since Down was big on the countdown, and that looks like a lightning / bottle situation that will never repeat itself.  This looks like the end of the line.

This is the typical space that I'd reserve for lamenting the fact that Bruno Mars has put yet another song on the countdown (giving him a total of 3 at the moment....yikes), but Treasure isn't as bad as the rest.  It's got a more catchy and upbeat melody than the lazy garbage he usually produces.  Of course, I could be regretting this a month later when whatever luster this song has totally wears off.

I've Got a Bad Case of the Blurbs

- So I sort of cheated everyone last week (to the extent someone offering free content on the internet can cheat another person) on my reviews of Daft Punk - Get Lucky and Drop City Yacht Club - Crickets.  A week later I can say that I definitively enjoy both, but I definitely have a preference for the smooth melody of Get Lucky.

- I very much enjoy saying that a song needs to go away, followed by seeing it go away the following week.  Adios Sweet Nothing.  I won't miss you.

- Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's two songs, Thrift Shop and Can't Hold Us, swapped places this week, with the latter assuming the #3 spot.  I don't get it.....with increased airplay, I find Can't Hold Us downright annoying and uninteresting, especially compared to its predecessor.  However, it seems like most people I talk to have the reverse opinion.  That doesn't mean that I'm wrong, does it?  Nah....couldn't be.

- Expect a lot of debuts this upcoming weekend.  I've been paying attention to Hits-1 airplay pretty closely and a plethora of new songs have gotten a ton of spins.  Some of which have been announced as "Ear Poppin' New Music" by the electro-DJ, which is an ironclad guarantee of an appearance on the following weekend's countdown.  I've noticed a lot of Hit-Bound songs appeared with greater frequency on the Wutchuwant countdowns and Spyder Harrison reallllly gave extra attention to the new stuff during his weekday shifts.  We'll see what happens.

Biggest DDDDDDRRRRROOOOOPPPPP!!!!....of the week: Of Monsters and Men – Little Talks (-32)
Biggest Jump of the Week: PSY – Gentleman (+17)

We’ve got (::yawn::) resurrections this week from fun. – Some Nights (all the way up at #22) and Cee Lo Green – Only You, so we’ve only got a couple new ones to touch on.  Daft Punk – Get Lucky is somewhat repetitive, but has a catchy underlying beat, and I have to say that I’m a fan of all the voice modulation and other effects.  I haven’t given this one quite enough spins, and will try to comment on it in a later installment.  Drop City Yacht Club – Crickets is the other new entrant and it’s in a similar boat.  I hate to cop out like this twice on the only new music, but I’ve been absurdly pressed for time and haven’t really given it a large amount of thought, and to be honest, both of these songs probably deserve more than I’ve been able to put in.

Blurb Notice

- Swedish House Mafia – Don’t You Worry Child seems to be enjoying a nice second win these days.

- Calvin Harris Ft. Florence Welch – Sweet Nothing needs to go away.  I don’t take back what I said when it debuted….it’s the first non-terrible thing Calvin Harris has contributed to this countdown.  But I only had so much tolerance for it, and that’s expired now.

- I have yet to hear The 1975 – Chocolate actually air on Hits-1, countdown or otherwise.  Obviously it has to stay my #1 Editor’s Pick at least until it happens.  Kinda hard to get sick of something you don’t hear.

- If anyone hasn’t seen the segment of Ke$ha on Conan from last week, it was something to see.  I walked away from that and thought, “Wow.  THAT got a higher SAT score than me.”

- Seriously, Kelsi Luck - That's What I Like is absurdly terrible.  Who is voting for this song?

- Sorry again about the abridgedness/tardiness.  Hopefully I’ll find more time next week.

Editor’s Picks – Top 5 Songs
1) The 1975 – Chocolate
2) Demi Lovato – Heart Attack

Biggest DDDDDRRRRRROOOOPPPPP!!!!....of the week: Cher Lloyd – With Ur Love (-15)
Biggest Jump of the Week: Capital Cities – Safe and Sound (+18)

We got a resurrection this week from Lumineers – Ho Hey.

Against all odds, PSY is not a one-hit wonder in North America, as Gentleman entered the countdown this past weekend.  Similar to Gangnam Style, my initial impression of this one is very unfavorable.  It’s possible that similar to Gangnam Style that it improves over time and achieves the lofty goal of “somewhat tolerable”, but the list of artists whose follow-up to their first breakthrough hit is an improvement over said breakthrough hit is a very short one.  Selena Gomez is back to music after her Spring Breakers hiatus, and Come & Get It is every bit as mediocre as we all fully hoped and expected it would be.  This is off her solo album; it appears that she’s ditched The Scene for the time being.

I ATE THE BLURBS!?!?!??

- Selena Gomez was also the host of this weekend’s countdown.  Authorities are currently looking into any sort of conspiracy regarding the coincidence of her song also making its debut this week.  Rumor has it that Spyder Harrison is trading prime countdown real estate to various artists in exchange for weekends off.  The evidence is really piling up.

- DJ Pauly D Ft. Jay Sean – Back To Love was ranked 11th last week, so its disappearance is rather puzzling.

- I’ve been meaning to mention this for a few weeks now….Flo Rida – Let It Roll is on Hit-Bound now.  You may remember it as that terrible, terrible song that got kicked off the countdown last November.  Well now that it’s already been a hit and subsequently stopped being a hit, it’s once again bound to be a hit.  Adele – Rumour Has It is the only other song that’s had this Hits-1 career path.

- In case it was vague, my opening line referred to my prediction that Pink Ft. Nate Reuss – Just Give Me a Reason would hit #1 from last week.  That song ties the record also held by Kelly Clarkson – Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You) for fastest ascent to #1 as measured from its debut weekend.

- HitBound on the whole is pretty discouraging right now, so if we’re going to get much improvement in the coming weeks, it’s going to have to go straight from high school to the NBA.
